Historically, "Qi" referred to a specific variety of wheat native to the region of the State of Qi (modern-day Shandong); it was named for its uniform ears, which stood straight and resisted lodging.

【Origins】

1. From the Ji (姬) Surname (Posthumous Title): During the Spring and Autumn period, the elder brother of Dukes Dai and Wen of the State of Wei was given the posthumous title "Qizi." His grandson, named E, adopted his grandfather’s title as his family name, thus establishing the Qi clan.

2. From the State of Qi (Lineage of Jiang Ziya): At the beginning of the Western Zhou, the State of Qi (capital at Linzi) was established by Lv Shang (better known as Jiang Ziya). In 386 BC, the Tian clan seized political power from the Jiang family. The descendants of the original ruling house adopted the name of their state as their surname.
