【Meaning】
The original meaning of 沙 (Sha) is sand or fine fragments of stone found in water. It is an "ideogrammatic" character (associative compound) composed of the radicals for Water (水) and Few/Less (少). It conveys the logic that when water recedes (becomes "less"), sand appears—as the saying goes: "Abundant water creates an ocean; scarce water reveals the sand." In Oracle Bone and Bronze inscriptions, the character depicts four to six small dots beside flowing water, representing tiny pebbles along a riverbank.
【Origins】
From the Jiang (姜) Surname: Tracing back to the descendants of Shennong (the Yan Emperor). A minister in the Yan Emperor's tribe was known as Susha-shi; his descendants eventually shortened the name to Sha.
From the Ancient State of Sha: Originating from the Marquisate of Sha (also known as the State of She or She-hou), which existed from the Western Zhou to the late Spring and Autumn period. The state was located in present-day Daming, Hebei. It later fell under the territory of the State of Zhao and was renamed Sha County during the Western Han Dynasty.
From the Zi (子) Surname: This lineage consists of descendants of Weizi Qi, the founding ancestor of the State of Song during the Zhou Dynasty. They were granted the fief of Sha (located in Ningling, Henan) and adopted the fief's name as their surname.
