【Meaning】
The character 缪 (Miao) was historically interchangeable with 穆 (Mu). It refers to the ceremonial order maintained in ancient ancestral temples, where the positions were categorized as Zhao (左昭 - left) and Mu (右穆 - right). This system followed a father-son progression: the father was Zhao and the son was Mu. The term Mu (also written as Miao) carries extended meanings of reverence, solemnity, and serenity.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname / State of Qin: This lineage originates from Duke Mu of Qin (Qin Mu Gong), a ruler during the Spring and Autumn period.
Historical Context: Duke Mu of Qin (whose personal name was Renhao and who belonged to the Ying surname group) was one of the famous "Five Hegemons of the Spring and Autumn Period." He reigned for thirty-nine years (659–620 BC), during which he conquered twelve states, laying the foundation for Qin's future greatness.
The Posthumous Name: After his death, he was given the posthumous title "Miao." In ancient phonetics, the characters 缪 and 穆 were homophones and were often used interchangeably. Consequently, his descendants adopted his posthumous title as their surname.
