2. The State of Zhang: The birthplace of the surname is Zhangcheng Village in Dongping County (now part of Zhangqiu, Shandong). During the Shang Dynasty, this area was the State of Zhang (鄣).

3. From Vassal to Surname: At the beginning of the Western Zhou, Jiang Ziya was enfeoffed in the State of Qi. The State of Zhang became a vassal to Qi. Later, the Duke of Qi enfeoffed the Zhang territory to one of his cadet sons. During the Spring and Autumn period, the State of Zhang was fully annexed by Qi. To remember their fallen country, the descendants adopted the state name "Zhang (鄣)" as their surname, but removed the "邑" (city/territory) radical (阝) on the right, resulting in the modern surname 章.
