Interpretation of the Peng Clan Totem
[Definition] "Peng" (彭) refers to the sound of a drum. This is an onomatopoeic character. In Oracle Bone Script, the left side of the character "Peng" depicts a drum, while the three diagonal strokes on the right represent the continuous sound emitted when the drum is struck.
[Origin] Jian Keng (also known as Peng Zu), the third son of Lu Zhong and a great-great-grandson of the ancient Emperor Zhuanxu, was a legendary figure known for his extraordinary longevity. He was employed starting from the era of Emperor Yao and was later enfeoffed in "Peng" (present-day Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province), where he established the Great Peng State. During the Shang Dynasty, the state was conquered by King Wuding. His descendants adopted the name of the state as their surname, which became the Peng clan.
