【起源】炎帝裔孙伯夷（姜姓），帝舜时任秩宗（掌宗庙礼仪的官），后又辅佐禹治水有功，于虞、夏之际被封于吕（今河南南阳西），建立侯爵吕国，称吕侯。“吕”不仅是地名，而且比喻辅佐的大臣，有赞誉褒奖之义。伯夷的子孙以国为氏，就是吕氏。吕国于公元前688年被楚国所灭。

【Definition】 The original meaning of Lu (吕) is a copper ingot. In Oracle Bone Script, the character resembles ancient copper cakes. In Bronze Inscriptions, the two "mouth" (口) components of the character were filled in, creating a direct visual representation of metal ingots. Therefore, "Lu" symbolizes the technology and industry of ancient smelting.

【Origin】 The surname originates from Boyi (Jiang surname), a descendant of the Yan Emperor. During the reign of Emperor Shun, Boyi served as the Zhizong (an official in charge of ancestral temple rituals). He later assisted Great Yu in successfully controlling the floods. Between the Yu and Xia dynasties, he was enfeoffed in Lu (west of modern-day Nanyang, Henan), where he established the Marquisate State of Lu and was known as the Marquis of Lu.

"Lu" is not only a geographical name but also serves as a metaphor for a supportive official, carrying a sense of praise and honor. Boyi’s descendants adopted the state name as their surname, forming the Lu clan. The State of Lu was eventually conquered by the State of Chu in 688 BC.
