Ancestral Hall

【Meaning】
The character 宫 (Gong) literally means "palace" or "house." In Oracle Bone and Bronze Inscriptions, the character is composed of an external roof structure and two vertically stacked "mouth" (口) radicals. This signifies a large architectural complex consisting of many interconnected rooms. The essence of the "Gong" totem represents a grand cluster of buildings.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: After King Wu of Zhou (Ji Fa) overthrew the Shang Dynasty and established the Zhou Dynasty, he enfeoffed his relative Zhong (his clan nephew through a shared great-grandfather) as the ruler of Yu, known as Yu Zhong.
The State of Gong (Gong-fu): King Wu also enfeoffed the son of Yu Zhong as the monarch of the State of Gong (pronounced tóng in ancient phonetics, located east of modern Pinglu County, Shanxi). The State of Gong lasted several generations before being annexed by the State of Jin.
The Transformation of Gong-zhi-qi: Gong-zhi-qi was originally a member of the royal Ji family. When the State of Gong (written with the "city/state" radical 阝) was destroyed by Jin, he fled to the State of Yu. To signify his departure from his fallen homeland, he removed the right "ear" radical (阝, which stands for Yi 邑, meaning a vassal state) from the character. By removing the symbol of the state, the character 宫阝 became 宫 (Gong). He adopted this as his surname and became known as Gong-zhi-qi. His descendants followed suit, using Gong as their clan name.
