Derived from the Jiang (姜) surname: During the reign of King Xuan of Zhou (Ji Jing), the ruler of the State of Qi, Jiang Wuji, passed away. He was given the posthumous title "Li," known historically as Duke Li of Qi. His direct and branch descendants adopted his posthumous title as their surname.
Derived from a State name: During the Zhou Dynasty, there was a vassal state named Li (located at Mount Lishan, northwest of present-day Sui County, Hubei). During the Spring and Autumn period, it was renamed the State of Sui. The descendants of the original rulers of the State of Li adopted the original state name as their surname.
