• 【釋義】 萬，蟲名，即蠍子。因蠍子是一種喜歡群居的動物，成千上萬的集聚在一起，後人就借用為數字，產生千、萬等讀數。

• 【起源】 1. 源於姬姓（畢公高後裔）： 周文王姬昌之子高，西周初受封建立畢國，稱為畢公高。春秋時，畢公高的後裔畢萬到晉國做官，因立大功，晉獻公把魏國舊地（今山西芮城北）賜給他，子孫以祖父之名為氏，稱萬氏。 2. 源於芮國（芮伯萬）： 周王朝芮伯，居芮地（今陝西大荔），建立芮國。春秋時期，傳至芮伯萬，他曾官至大司徒。但後來由於芮伯萬的寵姬太多，鬧得內宮不安，其母親芮姜一怒之下將他趕出國，到了魏城（今山西芮城），其後代亦以名為氏。

Definition of the Character: "萬" (Wan) was originally the name of an insect—the scorpion. Because scorpions are social creatures that often gather in massive clusters, ancient people borrowed the character to represent a great quantity, eventually becoming the numerical term for "ten thousand."

Origin: 1. Descendants of Bi Gong Gao: Ji Gao, a son of King Wen of Zhou, was enfeoffed at the State of Bi, becoming known as Bi Gong Gao. During the Spring and Autumn period, his descendant Bi Wan served as an official in the State of Jin. Due to his great military merit, Duke Xian of Jin granted him the former lands of the State of Wei (north of modern-day Ruicheng, Shanxi). His descendants adopted his name, "Wan," as their surname. 2. The State of Rui: The Earls of Rui established the State of Rui in modern-day Dalì, Shaanxi. During the Spring and Autumn period, Earl Wan of Rui served as the Grand Minister of Education (Da Situ). However, due to domestic turmoil involving his many concubines, his mother, Lady Jiang of Rui, expelled him from the country. He fled to Weicheng (modern-day Ruicheng, Shanxi), and his descendants also adopted "Wan" as their surname.
