【Meaning】
The original meaning of Qu (曲) refers to a silkworm tray (also known as canbo). This was an essential tool used by ancient Chinese people for sericulture (raising silkworms). These trays or mats were typically woven from bamboo, resembling large chopsticks or mats, and were also referred to as "silkworm curtains."
In a broader linguistic context, the character also evolved to mean "bent," "curved," or "melody/music," but its totemic origin is rooted in the practical industry of silk production.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: This lineage originates from the royal house of the Zhou Dynasty.
Historical Context: King Wu of Zhou enfeoffed his third son, Shu Yu, in the land of Jin. The eighth-generation descendant of Shu Yu was Marquis Mu of Jin (Jin Muhou) during the Spring and Autumn period.
The Fief of Quwo: Marquis Mu enfeoffed his younger son, Cheng Shi, in a place called Quwo (northeast of present-day Wenxi County, Shanxi).
Adoption of the Surname: The descendants of Cheng Shi (historically known as Huan Shu of Quwo) initially adopted the compound surname Quwo. Over time, this was simplified into the single-character surname Qu.
