【Definition】 The character Jiang (姜) originally referred to a type of domestic animal. In Oracle Bone Script, the structures of "Jiang" and "Qiang" (羌) are very similar; both are special characters related to sheep or rams, often depicting a person with sheep horns or a connection to herding.

【Origin】 The legendary Yan Emperor (炎帝), also known as the Lieshan or Shennong (Divine Farmer), was born by the Jiang River (west of modern-day Qishan County, Shaanxi). He took the name of the river as his surname, becoming the progenitor of the Jiang clan.

Over the course of history, many descendants of the Yan Emperor adopted different surnames for various reasons. During the transition between the Yu and Xia dynasties, Boyi—a descendant of the Yan Emperor and ancestor of the Siyue (Four Mountains) officials—assisted Great Yu in successfully controlling the floods. As a reward, he was enfeoffed in Lu (west of modern-day Nanyang, Henan), establishing the State of Lu. He was subsequently granted the ancestral surname Jiang to ensure the continuation of the Yan Emperor’s lineage.
