Lou (楼) translates to "high building" or "tower." Originally, it referred to buildings with two or more stories. Early Chinese pavilions and towers (Louge) were primarily constructed using wooden frameworks. Etymologically, the character Lou (楼) is derived from the root character Lou (娄).
The Lou surname is descended from Yu the Great, the legendary grandson of the Yellow Emperor.
At the beginning of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Lou Qu (also known as Duke Donglou), a descendant of the Xia Dynasty ruler Shao Kang, was enfeoffed in the State of Qi (present-day Qi County, Henan).
His branch descendants adopted "Lou" as their family name.
Handed down through generations to this day, it is one of the most ancient surnames in Chinese history. The Lou (娄) and Lou (楼) clans share the same ancestral source and lineage.
