Su (粟) means "grain." Its original meaning referred to cereal crops in general. In Northern China, it refers to foxtail millet; once the husk is removed, it is known as "Xiao-mi" (little rice), which is literally Su. It is considered the representative of the "Five Grains."

Descendants of the Lilu Clan: The Su surname originates from the Lilu Clan (粟陸氏), one of the oldest Chinese lineages and descendants of Fuxi.
Derived from Official Titles: During the Western Zhou Dynasty, there were official positions known as Sheren (Housemen), also called Mishi (Rice Scribes) or Sushi (Grain Scribes). Their superior was the Sheling. Among the descendants of these officials, some adopted their ancestors' titles—specifically Mishi-ling or Sushi-ling—as their surnames, resulting in the Mi and Su clans.
The Zhisu Neishi Office: During the Han Dynasty, there was an office called Zhisu Neishi (Minister of Grain and Agriculture). Some descendants adopted the title as their surname. This branch is traditionally associated with the Jiangling region.
