3. The Transition to Pei: By the sixth generation, a descendant named Ping Ling served during the reign of King Xi of Zhou. He was enfeoffed as the Lord of Xie (a location southwest of Linyi, Shanxi).

4. Symbolic Name Change: To signify that he had moved away from the original fief of Ping and established a new legacy, he modified the character. He removed the "City" (邑) radical from the bottom of his previous designation and replaced it with the "Clothing" (衣) radical, thus creating the surname Pei (裴).
