Interpretation of the Yan (嚴) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: The original meaning of "嚴" (Yan) is "urgent" or "pressing." The Shuowen Jiezi defines it as "the urgency of an imperial command." Its totemic origins depict a high-stakes scene: a person standing on a cliff edge, wielding a hunting spear against a charging wild boar, representing a moment of extreme tension and gravity (Yanjun).
Origin: The Yan surname primarily originates from the Zhuang (莊) surname. Historically, descendants of King Zhuang of Chu (Mi surname, based in Ying, modern-day Jiangling, Hubei) used his posthumous title, "Zhuang," as their surname. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, to observe the naming taboo for Emperor Ming (whose personal name was Liu Zhuang), the Zhuang clan changed their name to Yan, a character with a similar connotation of solemnity. During the Wei and Jin dynasties, some Yan families reverted to Zhuang, leading to the dual existence of both names. This shared history resulted in the traditional ancestral rule: "Zhuang and Yan do not intermarry," as they are considered one bloodline.
