Interpretation of the Feng Clan Totem
[Definition] "Feng" (馮) signifies a horse galloping swiftly. Its original meaning is a pictograph representing a noble steed charging forward, with its hooves thundering against the ground.
[Origin] In the late Spring and Autumn period, there was a high official in the State of Zheng (capital in present-day Xinzheng, Henan) named Feng Jianzi. Historical records describe him as "capable of deciding great matters." When the statesman Zichan was in power, he consulted Feng Jianzi on many significant affairs. His descendants adopted "Feng" from his name as their surname. Another lineage traces back to Bi Wan, a descendant of King Wen of Zhou, who was enfeoffed in Wei and took the surname Wei. Among the descendants of the Wei clan was the Marquis of Hua; his grandson, Changqing, was granted the fief of Fengcheng (west of present-day Xingyang, Henan) for his sustenance. He adopted the name of his fief as his surname, becoming the Feng clan. This lineage is historically regarded as the "Orthodox Feng," meaning the Feng and Wei clans share the same ancestral bloodline.
