From the Jiang (姜) Surname: During the Spring and Autumn period, Yan Ruo, an official of the State of Qi, was enfeoffed in Yan (modern-day Yancheng, northwest of Qihe County, Shandong). His descendants adopted the name of the fief as their surname.
From the Luzhong Clan: Traced back to Yan An, the son of Luzhong. According to records, the fifth son of the ancient Emperor Zhuanxu was named Yang An. His descendants adopted "Yan" as their surname. During the Spring and Autumn period, the Yan clan became one of the four prominent families of the State of Qi (alongside the Gao, Guo, and Bao clans), serving as court officials for generations.
