【Meaning】
The character 查 (Zha) was historically interchangeable with 楂 or 樝, referring to the hawthorn tree (mountain hawthorn). The clan originally adopted the hawthorn tree as its totem.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: During the reign of King Hui of Zhou (Spring and Autumn period), Ji Yan—a descendant of Bo Qin and son of Duke Zhuang of Lu—was granted the title of Viscount of Huan. He was given the fief of Zha (written as 樝 in ancient records, located in Jiyang). His descendants adopted the fief's name as their surname.
From the Jiang (姜) Surname: During the Spring and Autumn period, a son of the ruler Duke Qing of Qi was enfeoffed in a place called Zha (楂). He removed the "wood" radical (木) from the character to create the surname Zha (查).
From the Mi (芈) Surname: An official of the Chu royal clan (who bore the Mi surname) was granted the fief of Zha (柤) (an ancient variant of 查, located west of Nanzhang, Hubei). His descendants took the name of the fief as their surname.
From the Hawthorn Totem: A branch of the Dan (旦) people, subjects of the Yan Emperor, used the hawthorn tree as their totem and were known as the "Zha People."
