Interpretation of the Wang (汪) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: In ancient texts, "汪" (Wang) was written similarly to "王" (King), signifying greatness. Its original meaning refers to very deep water, further representing a vast, broad, and open expanse of water.
Origin: 1. During the era of Emperor Shun, there was a State of Wangmang tasked with guarding the Feng and Yu mountains (in modern-day Wukang, Zhejiang). The inhabitants, of the Qi (漆) surname, were known for their giant stature. During the time of Yu the Great, their leader, Fangfeng, was executed. The State of Wangmang persisted through the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties until its fall, after which the descendants adopted the state's name as their surname (Wangmang), later shortened to Wang. 2. Another branch originated from the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period. A younger son of Duke Cheng of Lu (of the Ji 姬 surname) was granted the fief of Wang (in modern-day Shandong). His descendants adopted the fief's name as their surname.
