【Meaning】
The character 窦 (Dou) literally means a hole, aperture, or cavity. In both ancient and modern Chinese, any type of hollow or opening can be referred to as a Dou.
【Origins】
From the Si (姒) Surname: This lineage originates from the place of refuge used by Hou Min, the consort of Emperor Tai Kang of the Xia Dynasty. It is a surname derived from a place of residence.
Historical Context: During the Xia Dynasty, the five younger brothers of Emperor Tai Kang and their mother, Hou Min, were imprisoned in a Dou (an underground pit or cave) and kept under surveillance by Yi, the leader of the Youqiong tribe.
The Escape and Rebirth: As Hou Min neared her due date, she managed to escape from the "Dou" with her sons and fled to her ancestral home in Youreng (present-day Jining, Shandong), where she gave birth to Shao Kang. Shao Kang was the fifth-generation descendant of Great Yu. To commemorate this pivotal historical event of survival in the cave, Shao Kang bestowed the surname Dou upon his two sons, Shu and Chong, who remained in Youreng.
