【释义】 蓝（繁体作“藍”），本义是一种一年生草本植物，即蓼蓝（俗称蓝靛草）。古人常采摘其叶提取青蓝色染料，古语有云“青，取之于蓝而青于蓝”。在字形上，从艹、监声。上古时期的蓝氏族人一定精于植物印染或以此类经济作物为氏族图腾，寓意着青出于蓝、色彩绚丽与文采斐然的家族气象。
【起源】 蓝氏源流主要有两个重要源头，其一源自嬴姓，属于以封邑名称为氏：
源于嬴姓（以封邑为氏）： 出自上古东夷部落首领伯益的后裔。战国中期（公元前 367 年），秦献公为了向东扩展秦国势力，在蒲地与蓝地（今陕西省蓝田县）等地设县，筑城防御并逼迫魏国边境。当时秦国嬴姓王室贵族“秦子向”因功获封于蓝田，其后裔子孙便以先祖的封地名称“蓝”为姓氏，世代相传，形成了今日蓝氏的主流。
源于神农氏（炎帝支系）： 另一支古老源头可追溯至神农氏十一世孙“昌奇”。相传昌奇在帝榆罔（炎帝部落末代首领）执政时担任火官，因分封于汝南蓝山，被赐姓为蓝，昌奇也被许多蓝氏族人尊为远古得姓始祖。
得姓始祖： 昌奇（远古始祖）、秦子向（蓝田始祖）
始祖地： 陕西蓝田、河南汝南
