【Meaning】
The original meaning of 巫 (Wu) refers to a person who prays to deities for blessings. In ancient times, women who served invisible spirits and made them manifest through music and dance were called Wu (shamans/sorceresses). In Oracle Bone Script, the character 巫 depicts a person dancing with flowing sleeves. Though their work dealt with the invisible, it followed strict rules and rituals.
【Origins】
From Wu Peng, a Minister of the Yellow Emperor: Wu Peng served as a medical officer under the Yellow Emperor and is considered the founder of the Wu clan as well as a pioneer of Chinese medicine.
From an Ancient Profession: The surname also originated from the ancient professional class responsible for prayer, divination, and sacrificial rites. Known as Wu-ren (Shamans/Priests), they were regarded as messengers of heaven and were highly revered by both royalty and commoners. These individuals often managed affairs related to astronomy, medicine, and arithmetic, holding significantly high status in the imperial court.
