【Meaning】
The character 项 (Xiang) originally refers to the nape of the neck (the back part of the human neck). As it describes a specific part of the human anatomy, its meaning was later extended to signify items, categories, or sub-sections (as used in the modern Chinese word Xiangmu 项目).
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: This lineage originates from the State of Xiang, a vassal state during the Spring and Autumn period. It was a viscountcy (Zijue) under the Zhou Dynasty.
Historical Context: In 643 BC, Duke Xi of Lu annexed the State of Xiang. Following the fall of their nation, the royal descendants adopted the name of their state as their surname. The territory later fell under the control of the State of Chu, and the Qin Dynasty eventually established it as a county. The ancient seat of government was located in what is now Huaidian Town, Shenqiu (southeast of modern Xiangcheng, Henan).
