【Meaning】
The original meaning of 吴 (Wu) is "to speak loudly" or "to shout." According to the Shuowen Jiezi (an ancient dictionary), "Wu is a surname and also a place name." In Oracle Bone Script, the character depicts a person with a large, tilted head, dancing and gesticulating while speaking or singing loudly—representing a state of high energy and vocal expression.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: Gugong Danfu, the leader of the Zhou tribe, had three sons: Taibo, Zhongyong, and Jili. To ensure the throne passed to the youngest (Jili), the two elder brothers, Taibo and Zhongyong, fled to the Wu-Yue region along the southeastern coast.
The State of Wu: They established the State of Wu with its capital at Wu (modern-day Suzhou, Jiangsu). In 585 BC, Shoumeng (the 19th-generation descendant of Zhongyong) formally declared himself King, and the state grew in power.
The Fall of Wu: During the reign of King Fuchai, the state was defeated by King Goujian of Yue, and the kingdom fell in 473 BC. The royal family scattered to escape danger; to honor their lost nation, they adopted Wu as their surname.
Ancient Roots: An even earlier branch of the Wu surname traces back to Wu Quan, a minister under the ancient Emperor Zhuanxu, originating in what is now Puyang, Henan.
