Derived from the State of Xu: The ancient State of Xu was a nation during the Tang and Yu periods (legendary era of Emperors Yao and Shun). It was established in the land of Ao, also known as Xu Ao. The former site is located in present-day Yanshi, Henan. The people adopted the state name as their surname.
Legend of Huaxu: There is a legend regarding the origin of the Xu surname which suggests it comes from the Huaxu Clan. It is said that Huaxu gave birth to a son, Fuxi, and a daughter, Nüwa (ancestors of humanity in Chinese mythology).
Descendants of Xu Chen: In the State of Jin, there was a high official named Xu Chen. His lineage continued through his son Xu Jia, grandson Xu Ke, and great-grandson Xu Tong. This lineage has been passed down through generations and remains a primary source of the Xu surname today.
