【Meaning】
Bao (包) is an ideogrammatic character and was the ancient form of the word for "embryo" or "placenta" (胞). In Oracle Bone Script and Bronze Script, the character Bao resembles a fetus wrapped within the protective membrane of the womb, ready to be born. It symbolizes the origin of life, protection, and the containment of potential.
【Origins】
From the Feng (风) Surname (Lineage of Fuxi): The lineage traces back to the descendants of Baoxi (better known as Fuxi), the first of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. Baoxi’s descendants adopted his name as their family name, establishing one of the earliest Bao lineages.
The Loyalty of Shen Baoxu: During the late Spring and Autumn period, a descendant of the Chu monarch Fenmao named Baoxu was enfeoffed in the land of Shen (present-day Nanyang, Henan), thus becoming known as Shen Baoxu.
The Rescue of Chu: When the State of Chu was overran by the State of Wu, Shen Baoxu traveled to the Qin court to plead for help. He famously wept for seven days and nights without ceasing. Moved by his extreme loyalty, Duke Ai of Qin dispatched troops to rescue Chu, allowing the state to be restored.
Adoption of the Surname: In the 14th year of King Jing of Zhou, the descendants of Shen Baoxu officially adopted the character Bao as their surname to honor their ancestor's legacy.
