【Meaning】
The original meaning of Ou (区) refers to an ancient measuring vessel. Historically, four Dou (豆) made one Ou (区). The character also carries the meaning of "to hide" or "to conceal" (as in a storehouse or secluded area).
【Origin】
From the swordsmith Ou Yezi: During the Spring and Autumn period, the legendary craftsman Ou Yezi lived at Mount Ouyu. He was famous for forging peerless weapons (swords). His descendants adopted "Ouye" as their surname, which was later simplified by removing the "欠" radical, resulting in the surname Ou (区). The characters 欧 and 区 are homophones in this context.
From the lineage of King Wujiang: Emperor Shaokang of the Xia Dynasty had a son named Wuyu, who was enfeoffed at Kuaiji and established the State of Yue. During the reign of Wujiang (the 6th-generation descendant of King Goujian), Yue was conquered by the State of Chu. Wujiang’s second son, Ti, was enfeoffed at the southern side of Mount Ouyu in Wucheng. Following the tradition that the south of a mountain is "Yang," his descendants took the mountain and his title as their surnames, forming the three distinct branches: Ou (欧), Ouyang (欧阳), and Ouhou (欧侯). The surname Ou (区) emerged as a simplified variant.
