【Meaning】
The original meaning of 季 (Ji) refers to young grain (seedlings). It is an ideogrammatic character. According to the Shuowen Jiezi: "Ji means the youngest." In Oracle Bone Script, the character consists of "Grain" (禾) at the top and "Child" (子) at the bottom, symbolizing young, tender crops that have recently sprouted from the earth. By extension, it represents the youngest among brothers or the final month of a season.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname (State of Wu): This lineage originates from Ji Zha, a member of the royal house of the State of Wu during the Spring and Autumn period. It belongs to the category of surnames derived from ancestral seniority rankings (in ancient China, brothers were ranked as Bo, Zhong, Shu, and Ji, with Ji being the youngest).
The Virtue of Ji Zha: Ji Zha was the fourth son of King Shoumeng of Wu and the younger brother of Ji Zhufan. He was enfeoffed in Yanling (present-day Changzhou, Jiangsu) and Zhoulai (present-day Fengtai, Anhui).
Renowned Wisdom: Famous for his wisdom and integrity, Ji Zha famously declined the throne multiple times to maintain moral order. He traveled to the states of Qi, Zheng, and Jin, and famously "observed the music" in the State of Lu. His far-sighted political insights were highly regarded by his contemporaries. His descendants adopted his seniority ranking, Ji, as their family name.
