【Meaning】
In ancient times, the characters 涂, 涂, and 塗 were used interchangeably. The character 塗 is composed of the radicals for Water (水), Earth (土), and the character Yu (余). In Oracle Bone Script, the component Yu resembles the structure of a house. Together, the totem signifies a settlement built near water and fertile soil, representing a stable and prosperous household.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname (State of Jin): The lineage originates from Zhi Xuwu, the son of Zhi Wenzi. Because the ancient character for "Zhi" (智) was interchangeable with "Zhi" (知), he is also known as Zhi Xuwu. He was a Grand Official (Dafu) of the State of Jin during the Spring and Autumn period and a sixth-generation ancestor of the Zhi clan.
The Fief of Tushui: In 514 BC, after the Qi and Yangshe clans of Jin were eliminated by the "Six Ministers," General Wei Xianzi divided the Qi clan's lands into seven counties. Regarding Zhi Xuwu as a capable descendant who could preserve the family legacy, Wei promoted him to the position of Grand Official of Tushui. His descendants adopted the name of the Tushui River (which flowed through present-day Yuci, Shanxi) as their surname. This is the earliest recorded origin of the Tu surname.
Expansion to the Southeast: During the Jin Dynasty (266–420 AD), a famous descendant named Tu Qin served as a high-ranking founding official, Grand Marshal, and the Marquis of Xinwu. He was enfeoffed in Xinwu (present-day Fengxin, Jiangxi) and is revered as the founding ancestor of the Tu clan across the eight southeastern provinces.
