The character "Jing" existed first, representing a well-ordered water source and land division system (the Well-field system). Later, the character "Xing" emerged specifically to denote the state and the surname, maintaining the connotation of order, source, and settlement.

【Origins】

1. From the State of Xing (Lineage of the Duke of Zhou): The Xing surname originated in the Zhou Dynasty from the descendants of Ji Dan (the Duke of Zhou), the architect of Zhou rituals and music. In the 11th century BC, King Cheng enfeoffed Jing Yuan, the fourth son of the Duke of Zhou, in Xing (present-day Xingtai, Hebei) to establish the State of Xing.

2. Annexation and Adoption: In 635 BC, the State of Xing was annexed by the State of Wei. To commemorate their fallen homeland, the descendants adopted "Xing" as their surname.

3. From the Fief of Xing (Lineage of Tang Shu Yu): Another branch stems from the Han clan of the State of Jin. A descendant of Tang Shu Yu (son of King Wen of Zhou) was granted the Fief of Xing (located in present-day Wen County, Henan). His descendants subsequently adopted the fief's name as their surname, with the prominent branch emerging from Hejian.
