Interpretation of the Li (黎) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "黎" (Li) refers to "black earth" or dark soil. In ancient times, fertile black soil was called Li. The character is also phonetically and conceptually linked to "犁" (Li), meaning a plow, signifying the clan's early connection to agriculture and the land.
Origin: During the Shang Dynasty, there were vassal states known as the State of Li. Near the end of the Shang, Xibo Ji Chang (King Wen of Zhou) conquered the State of Li. After King Wu defeated the Shang and redistributed territories, he enfeoffed the descendants of Cheng Tang (the founder of the Shang) in the State of Li with the title of Marquis. A prominent later ruler was Marquis Feng Shu. Historical records like the Yuanhe Genealogy note two distinct Li states during the Shang:
One in modern-day southwest Changzhi, Shanxi, conquered by King Wen.
Another in modern-day west Yuncheng, Shandong. The descendants of both states adopted "Li" as their surname. Furthermore, the Fengsu Tongyi states that these two Li states were both descendants of the ancient "Jiuli" (Nine Li) tribes.
