Interpretation of the Duan (Duan) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "段" (Duan) means "to strike" or "to hammer." The Shuowen Jiezi defines it as "hammering an object." In Bronze Script, the character depicts a hand (手), a cliff or workspace (崖), and two small marks representing debris or sparks, symbolizing the act of a craftsman hammering stone or metal.
Origin: In 744 BC, after Duke Zhuang of Zheng (Ji Wusheng) ascended the throne, he enfeoffed his younger brother, Shu Duan, in Jing (modern-day Jingxiangcheng Village, Xingyang, Henan). Shu Duan attempted to seize power and launched an attack on the capital in 722 BC. He was defeated by Duke Zhuang and fled to Gong (modern-day Huixian, Henan), becoming known as Gong Shu Duan. Among his grandsons, one branch adopted his name as their surname, establishing the Duan clan.
