Interpretation of the Du Clan Totem
[Definition] The character's meaning is pictographic. "Du" (杜) is composed of "Mu" (木 - wood) and "Tu" (土 - earth), with "Tu" serving as the phonetic component. The original meaning of Du is the name of a tree, specifically the Du Li (Birchleaf Pear), also known as Gantang.
[Origin] The Du surname began with Du Keng, who invented alcohol during the era of the Yellow Emperor. However, because the lineage following Du Keng lacks written records, some genealogical texts consider the Du clan to have originated from a state name. In the early Western Zhou Dynasty, descendants of Liu Lei who resided in the former State of Tang were relocated and enfeoffed in Du (southeast of present-day Xi'an, Shaanxi), where they established the State of Du and were known as Du Bo (Earl of Du). During the reign of King Xuan of Zhou, the ruler of Du, Du Bo, served as a high official at court but was falsely accused and executed despite his innocence. Following the loss of their state, some descendants adopted the former state's name as their surname, forming the Du clan.
