Interpretation of the Xiang (向) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "向" (Xiang) literally means "facing" or "direction." Its original meaning refers to a north-facing window or a chimney vent. In ancient Chinese dwellings, this was a crucial architectural feature for ventilation, light, and allowing smoke to escape, symbolizing clarity and the flow of energy (Qi).
Origin: 1. From the Zi (子) Surname (Royalty of Song): This branch is descended from Duke Huan of Song. His son, Gongzi Xi, held the courtesy name Xiangfu. His grandson, Xiang Xu, who served as the "Left Marshal" (Zuo Shi), adopted his grandfather's courtesy name as the family surname. 2. From the Shennong Lineage (State of Xiang): During the early Western Zhou Dynasty, King Wu enfeoffed a descendant of Emperor Yan (Shennong) in the region of Xiang (modern-day southern Ju County, Shandong), creating the State of Xiang. The ruler was titled the Earl of Xiang. After the state was absorbed by the State of Ju, the inhabitants adopted the name of their country as their surname.
