【Meaning】
Ruan (阮) originally refers to the "Five Ruan Passes." It is also the name of a mountain. The character is composed of Yuan (元) and Fu (阜). Yuan signifies the "beginning of life" or "origin," while Fu represents an earthen mountain or hill. In Oracle Bone Script and Bronze Script, the character Yuan is depicted as a person with a prominent, emphasized head, symbolizing the "head" or "primary" part of a being.
【Origins】
From the Gaoyao Lineage (Shang Dynasty): The surname originates from the State of Ruan, a vassal state during the Shang Dynasty. The descendants of Gaoyao (the legendary Minister of Justice under Emperor Shun) were enfeoffed in the State of Ruan (present-day Jingchuan, Gansu).
The Fall of the State: At the end of the Shang Dynasty, Ji Chang (the Chief of the West, later King Wen of Zhou) led his army to conquer the State of Ruan. The members of the Ruan royal family made a pact to adopt the name of their fallen country as their surname to preserve their heritage, thus establishing the Ruan clan.
