2. The Fall of the State: At the end of the Shang Dynasty, Ji Chang (the Chief of the West, later King Wen of Zhou) led his army to conquer the State of Ruan. The members of the Ruan royal family made a pact to adopt the name of their fallen country as their surname to preserve their heritage, thus establishing the Ruan clan.
