Interpretation of the Lei (雷) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "雷" (Lei) refers to thunder and lightning. In ancient pictographs, the character often depicted the drums of the thunder god or the rolling sound of thunder through repeated circular patterns.
Origin: The lineage traces back to Fang Lei Shi, a 9th-generation descendant of the Yan Emperor (Shennong). Because he assisted the Yellow Emperor in the legendary battle against the rebel Chiyou, he was enfeoffed at Fang Mountain (near the Songshan range, specifically Fangshan Town in modern-day Yuzhou, Henan). He established a vassal state there, and his descendants adopted the state's name as the compound surname Fanglei. Later, this lineage split into two separate surnames: Fang and Lei.
