【Meaning】
The original meaning of 童 (Tong) refers to a servant or slave. In ancient times, men who became slaves due to crimes were called Tong, while women in the same position were called Qie (妾). In Oracle Bone Script, the character Tong depicts a person wearing shackles or punishment devices, standing on a mound of earth, and standing on their tiptoes to gaze into the distance. It symbolizes a longing for freedom or a connection to a specific territory.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname (Lineage of the Yellow Emperor): The surname originates from Lao Tong, the son of Emperor Zhuanxu (who was the grandson of the Yellow Emperor).
The Legend of Lao Tong: Lao Tong, also known as Juan Zhang, resided at Mount Gui. Legend has it that he was born with a magnificent voice; whether speaking or singing, his voice was as resonant and clear as a bronze bell or a stone chime (Zhong Qing), full of musical rhythm.
Illustrious Descendants: Lao Tong was the ancestor of many legendary figures in Chinese history, including Zhongli, Wuhui, Luzhong, Zhurong (the God of Fire), and Pengzu (the God of Longevity). His descendants adopted his name, Tong, as their family name to honor their royal lineage.
The Xu Tong Branch: Another branch traces back to Xu Tong, a high official of the State of Jin during the Spring and Autumn period, further diversifying the clan's roots.
