Interpretation of the Fang (方) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: The original meaning of "方" (Fang) is "parallel boats" or "moored boats." In Oracle Bone Script, the character resembles two boats tied closely together in the water. Historically, those who forcibly lashed boats together were called "Fang," which carried connotations of power, force, or compulsion.
Origin: The lineage traces back to Fang Lei Shi, the eldest son of Emperor Yuwang (the 8th generation descendant of the Yan Emperor, Shennong). Because he assisted the Yellow Emperor in the battle against Chiyou, he was enfeoffed at Fang Mountain (located in the Songshan mountain range, specifically near Fangshan Town in modern-day Yuzhou, Henan). His descendants adopted the name of this land as their surname, establishing the Fang clan.
