【Meaning】
Chi (迟) means "late" or "delayed," the opposite of early. Its original meaning refers to moving slowly or at a relaxed pace. By extension, it signifies a sense of being leisurely and unhurried. The "Chi People" were historically associated with slow movement or delayed gatherings; thus, it is likely that the clan originated from deep forests or areas with muddy, difficult roads where travel was inherently inconvenient.
【Origin】
The surname originates from the Zi (子) surname, descended from Chi Ren, a sage of the Shang Dynasty. The clan adopted their ancestor's name as their surname.
When Pan Geng (the 20th King of the Shang Dynasty and 9th-generation descendant of Tang the Completer) decided to move the capital from Yan (modern-day Qufu, Shandong) to Yin (modern-day Anyang, Henan), he faced fierce opposition from the nobility. To persuade the officials and citizens, Pan Geng issued a proclamation (recorded in the Book of Documents as "Pan Geng"). In this address, he famously quoted the maxim of Chi Ren:
"In people, seek the old [long-standing relationships]; in tools, seek not the old, but the new!" Because of this pivotal moment in history, the Shang Dynasty is often referred to as Yin or Yin-Shang. The descendants of Chi Ren took "Chi" as their surname to honor his legacy and wisdom.
