Interpretation of the Tao (陶) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "陶" (Tao) evolved from the components "匋" (vessel) and "⻏" (mound/kiln). In ancient times, Tao referred to pottery or earthenware fired in a kiln. The character itself visually represents the process of shaping earth with fire.
Origin: 1. Craftsmen and Officials: The surname originated from the ancient artisans who made pottery and the officials who managed its production. When King Cheng of Zhou assigned the "Seven Clans of Yin" to Kang Shu of Wei, the Tao clan was listed first, indicating the family's prominence in the capital region of the Shang Dynasty. 2. Emperor Yao: Before becoming ruler, Emperor Yao resided in Tao (modern-day Dingtao, Shandong). He was involved in pottery making and held the title of Taozheng (Pottery Administrator); the location became known as Taoqiu. Later, he was enfeoffed in Tang as the Marquis of Tang, leading to the name Taotang Shi. His descendants adopted his original residence as their surname, which was eventually simplified to Tao and Tang.
