【Meaning】

The original meaning of Rong (容) is "to contain" or "to hold." In ancient scripts, the character is composed of 宀 (roof/house) and 谷 (valley) (or in some interpretations, 公, meaning public/fair). It carries the sense of inclusion, tolerance, and capacity. By extension, it signifies concepts such as forbearance (宽容), composure (从容), and appearance/countenance (容貌).

【Origin】

1. From Rong Cheng: An official under the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi). He is credited as the earliest inventor of the calendar (Lifia). His descendants adopted the surname "Rong Cheng," which was later shortened to Rong (容).

2. From Zhong Rong: One of the talented sons ("Eight Talents") of Gao Yang (Emperor Zhuanxu). His descendants adopted their ancestor's name as their surname, becoming the Rong (容) clan.
