【Meaning】 The character Ma (麻) originally referred specifically to hemp (cannabis), commonly known as "fire hemp" (huoma). It is an annual herb with dioecious plants (separate male and female). The bast fiber of its stem is long and tough, making it suitable for weaving textiles.
【Origin】
Derived from the Mi (芈) clan: It originated from Mayi (present-day Dangshan, Anhui), the fief of an official in the State of Chu during the Zhou Dynasty. Ma Ying, the governor (Yin) of Mayi, fled to the State of Qi where he served as a high official (Dafu). His descendants adopted the name of the fief as their surname.
Derived from a Place Name: During the Spring and Autumn period, an official of the State of Chu was granted land in Ma (present-day Macheng, Hubei). His descendants later adopted the place name as their surname.
