Interpretation of the Hao (郝) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "郝" (Hao) means "great fire." The character is a combination of "赤" (Chi/Red) and the radical for "邑" (Yi/City or Fief). In Oracle Bone and Bronze scripts, "赤" is an associative compound formed by the characters for "Great" (大) and "Fire" (火), signifying a massive blaze or the intense color of a great fire.
Origin: Xie (the ancestor of the Shang people) assisted Yu the Great in taming the floods and was appointed Minister of Education (Situ) by Emperor Shun, residing in Shang (modern-day Shangqiu, Henan). Legend says his mother conceived him after swallowing the egg of a "Black Bird" (Swallow), thus he was granted the surname Zi. He served as the Huozheng (Master of Fire), also known as Ebo, which led the Zi surname to also be known as the Chi (Red) surname. The Shang tribe grew in power and eventually overthrew the Xia Dynasty under the leadership of Tang (Xie's 14th-generation descendant). During the reign of Emperor Yi (the 30th King of Shang), a descendant named Qi was enfeoffed in Haoxiang (modern-day Taiyuan, Shanxi). His descendants adopted the name of this fief as their surname.
