Descendants of the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi): Yu Yang, a son of the Yellow Emperor, was enfeoffed as the God of the East Sea. His grandson, Yu Qiang, was further enfeoffed as the God of the North Sea. Taking great pride in their ancestral roles as deities of the ocean, their descendants adopted Hai as their surname.
Derived from the Official "Chun" of the State of Wei: During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a high-ranking official named Chun serving under Duke Ling of Wei. Because he resided by the seashore, he named himself Hai Chun (Chun of the Sea). His descendants subsequently adopted Hai as their family name.
