【起源】源自上古三皇五帝最后一位禅让制帝皇舜帝姚重华有虞氏后代的封地，以国名为氏。舜帝有号称有虞氏，又称虞舜，姓姚，名重华。 尧让位于舜，在位三十九年。舜是中国历史上的先贤，是尧之后古帝王部落联盟首领，是禅让制的代表，以受尧的“禅让”而称王于天下。 禹治水有功，舜帝在年老时将帝位禅让大禹，大禹把舜帝的儿子封在虞，并建立虞国（今河南虞城），子孙以国为氏。

In oracle bone script (Jiaguwen), the character depicts a human figure combined with nets and traps—symbolizing the act of driving wild animals into a net to capture them all at once.

【Origins】

1. From the Fief of Emperor Shun: The surname originates from the fiefdom granted to the descendants of Emperor Shun (Yao Chonghua), the last of the legendary "Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors" to rule via the abdication system.

2. Historical Context: Emperor Shun was known as Youyu-shi (meaning "of the Yu clan") or Yu Shun. His surname was 姚 (Yao) and his given name was Chonghua. Emperor Yao abdicated his throne to Shun, who ruled for thirty-nine years. Shun is revered as a sage in Chinese history and a champion of the meritocratic abdication system (Chanrang).

3. Establishment of the State: Because Great Yu (Da Yu) was successful in controlling the Great Flood, Emperor Shun abdicated the throne to him in his old age. In return, Great Yu enfeoffed Shun's son in Yu (present-day Yucheng, Henan), establishing the State of Yu. His descendants subsequently adopted the state's name as their surname.
