【Meaning】
The original meaning of Qiao (乔) is "tall with a curved top." It is an ideogrammatic character. The upper part is "Yao" (夭 - bending/yielding), and the lower part is a simplified form of "Gao" (高 - tall). Together, they represent the image of something high-reaching that gracefully curves or arches at the summit, such as a tall, swaying tree or a mountain peak.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname (Guardians of the Yellow Emperor's Tomb): The Qiao surname originated from the Qiao (桥 - Bridge) surname and is named after a mountain. Legend has it that after the death of the Yellow Emperor (the common ancestor of the Central Plains tribes), he was buried at Mount Qiao (Qiaoshan, in present-day Huangling, Shaanxi). His descendants who remained at Mount Qiao to guard and maintain the imperial tomb adopted the mountain's name as their surname, calling themselves the Qiao (桥) clan.
The Imperial Decree of the Northern/Western Wei: During the Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a Grand Commandant named Qiao Xuan. His sixth-generation descendant, Qiao Qin, served as the Internal Secretary of Pingyuan during the Northern Wei. He followed Emperor Xiaowu to join the Western Wei established by Yuwen Tai. One day, on a sudden whim, Yuwen Tai commanded Qiao Qin to remove the "Wood" radical (木) from his surname "Qiao" (桥), changing it to Qiao (乔). This change was meant to evoke the meaning of "lofty and far-reaching."
