Shuai (帅) originally referred to a pendant cloth or sash worn at the waist.
In Oracle Bone Script, the character "Shuai" resembles two hands holding a woven mat, without the "cloth" (巾) radical seen today.
By the time of Bronze Inscriptions (Jinwen), it evolved into a phono-semantic character.
It was eventually borrowed to mean a commander or general. Because the character incorporated the meaning of a headpiece or sash (symbolizing status), it came to represent a leader.
During the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, "Shuai" was an official military title. Historically, "ten states formed a Lian (alliance), and a Lian had a Shuai (commander)." Originally a grassroots officer title, it later rose in status to denote the commander of a whole army or nation. The "Shuai people" were likely associated with their ancestors' official positions or geographic locations named Shuai. They adopted "Shuai" as their primitive totem and surname.
Derived from Official Titles: Originating from the military rank Shi Shuai, a specific officer position within the military system of the Western Zhou Dynasty.
Avoidance of a Royal Name (Naming Taboo): During the Spring and Autumn period, Wang Jizi (son of King Kuang of Zhou) was enfeoffed in Liu (present-day Yanshi, Henan) and was known as Duke Kang of Liu, serving as a high official. His descendants adopted the surname Shi (师). During the Western Jin Dynasty, to avoid the naming taboo of the Emperor Sima Shi, the Shi clan changed their surname to Shuai (帅).
