Interpretation of the Lu (陸) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "陸" (Lu) refers to a large earthen mountain or, more broadly, "land" (as opposed to water). It is an ideogram: the left radical (阜) signifies height, while the right side indicates a terrain composed of soil without rocks.
Origin: 1. From the Yun-Rong (允姓之戎), a branch of the ancient Rong people who originally lived in Guazhou (modern-day Dunhuang). During the Spring and Autumn period, pressured by the states of Qin and Jin, they migrated to Luhun in the Yi River valley (near modern-day Song County, Henan) as subjects of Jin. After being annexed by Jin in 525 BC, their descendants adopted "Lu" as their surname. 2. From the Tian (田) family. King Xuan of the Tian-Qi State (reigned 319–301 BC) enfeoffed his youngest son, Tian Tong, in Luxiang (modern-day Pingyuan or Leling, Shandong). This was the same land once granted to Lu Zhong, the great-great-grandson of the legendary Emperor Zhuanxu. Tian Tong’s descendants took the name of this fief as their surname.
