【Meaning】
Hui (惠) signifies benevolence, kindness, or mercy. In ancient China, it was frequently used as a posthumous title (shìhào 谥号) for emperors, monarchs, and high-ranking officials to honor their compassionate governance or virtuous character after their death.
【Origin】
Descendants of the Yellow Emperor: Traced back to Hui Lian, the second son of Lu Zhong. Lu Zhong was the son of Wu Hui, who was the grandson of Zhuanxu (who in turn was the grandson of the Yellow Emperor). His descendants adopted their ancestor's name, "Hui," as their surname.
From the Posthumous Title of King Hui of Zhou: The fifth monarch of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty was named Ji Lang. After his passing, he was given the posthumous title "Hui," known historically as King Hui of Zhou. His descendants adopted his posthumous title as their surname, forming the Hui clan.
