Interpretation of the Mo (莫) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: The original meaning of "莫" (Mo) is "the sun is about to set." It is an associative compound character depicting the Sun (日) sinking into the thick grass or underbrush (茻) at the foot of a mountain. In later Chinese, the original meaning was replaced by the character "暮" (Mu), while "Mo" evolved into a negative particle (meaning "none" or "not"). However, the totem remains a symbol of the sunset.
Origin: The lineage traces back to the ancient Gao Yang clan. Legend has it that the Emperor Zhuanxu (one of the Five Great Emperors) built the city of Maoyang (in the area of modern-day Renqiu and Pingxiang, Hebei). His junior descendants settled in Maoyang and later removed the "City/Fief" radical (⻏) from the city's name to adopt "Mo" as their surname.
